Developing a world-class corporate structure: The Yamatake Group’s new philosophy, new azbil logo, and long-term objectives at the start of its second century

Yamatake Corporation will celebrate its 100th anniversary on December 1 this year. Preparing for its second century and committed to building customer trust, the company has been actively engaged in reforming its business structure for the development of the Yamatake Group as a whole. This fiscal year is the last in Yamatake’s current Three-Year Plan (FY2005~2007), designed to strengthen the business structure, and it is expected that final figures for both sales and profits will significantly exceed original targets. Using this success as a springboard for the Group to leap ahead into its second century, Yamatake has set out its long-term objectives and at the same time adopted a new corporate philosophy and created a new logo for the Group.

Up until now, Yamatake has pursued the philosophy of Savemation – that is, to applying automation technologies to contribute to energy saving, resource saving, and environmental protection. Nevertheless, we now find ourselves in a rapidly changing world which demands that we change: the aging population and increasing concerns for safety and security are just some of the factors behind the changing society that has in turn led to changes in the business environment. Thus, in preparing to celebrate our centennial, we have given careful thought to what kind of value we can offer our customers in future. This has led to the adoption of a new corporate philosophy – namely, “To realize safety, comfort and fulfillment in people’s lives, and contribute to the global environment through ‘human-centered automation.’” We are committed to promoting integrated group management for finding solutions to the issues facing our customers, with the whole Yamatake Group working as a team. And azbil has been chosen as the symbol for this new approach.

Yamatake Group Philosophy

To realize safety, comfort and fulfillment in people’s lives, and contribute to the global environment through “human-centered automation.”

To achieve our philosophy,

  • We create value together with customers at their site.
  • We pursue our unique value based on the idea of “human-centered.
  • We think about the future and act progressively.

Human-centered automation is a technology that aims to understand what makes people happy and fulfilled, and produce happiness for every individual.

A shift from controlling equipment to fulfilling people’s satisfaction. To realize a sense of security and comfort through safe and pleasant living and working environments, as well as a sense of fulfillment form realizing one’s goals; we have defined this as the core value generated by the Yamatake Group.

Yamatake Group Symbol azbil

We have created a new group symbol azbil (Automation・Zone・Builder).
Azbil represents our philosophy of realizing safety, comfort and fulfillment in people’s lives, and contributing to the global environment through human-centered automation.

The roundness of the letters signifies tender humanity, and the oval shape curving upward to the right expresses our unlimited potential.

This Group logo is intended to encourage team spirit among the Group employees who create new value together with the customers. It will be carefully nurtured so as to grow into the future Group brand, supported by our customers. On October 1, azbil replaced the various logos and corporate symbols previously used by members of the Yamatake Group. It is now being widely used on business cards, billboards, and products.

Long-term objectives

Regarding Yamatake’s long-term objectives, we have formulated a Ten-Year Plan, leading up to FY2014, the first three years of which (FY2005-2007) represent the “building Yamatake spirit” phase, as explained below.

Objectives:
To become a world-class corporate group that is human-centered, that focuses on realizing a world of automation created by both people and technology, that enhances customer safety and security as well as enterprise value, and that contributes to solving global environmental problems.

3-phase plan
The Ten-Year Plan for achieving these long-term objectives is comprised of 3 phases (refer to the graph below).

Phase 1 (FY2005~2007): Building Yamatake Spirit
The current Three-Year Plan (FY2005~2007) is dedicated to “building Yamatake spirit”. In this phase we have been implementing three reforms: “Creating a new business (business structure reform)”, “Creating a new work style (business operation reform)” and “Building Yamatake Spirit (creating a new corporate culture)”. Specifically, we are focusing on building Yamatake spirit for Yamatake’s second century; strengthening links, vertical and horizontal, within the Group by drawing on the key concept of synergy; and building team spirit for generating profits and fostering cooperation within the Group. We have added Life Automation (LA) as our third core business, joining Building Automation (BA) and Advanced Automation (AA); and we have been reinforcing the foundation of our overseas business. (Note: consolidated sales grew from 170 billion yen in FY2004 to 188.3 billion yen in FY2006; following the addition of Kimmon Manufacturing Co., Ltd. to the Yamatake Group in FY2007, projected sales for the current fiscal year are 230 billion yen. Operating income grew from 6.8 billion yen in FY2004 to 13.5 billion yen in FY2006, already exceeding our medium-term target; for FY2007, an operating income of 16 billion yen is projected.)

Phase 2 (FY2008~2010): Strengthening the Foundation
The Three-Year Plan (FY2008~2010) that will start next year covers the phase of foundation strengthening. Based on the corporate philosophy of “human-centered automation”, we will reinforce the foundation of our business, paying careful attention to fostering customer satisfaction and high customer expectations so as to promote the continuity and growth potential of our business through creating business, creating work, and building Yamatake spirit. By reforming our triple-axis business configuration (BA, AA and LA), we will work to create a high value-added structure that will amply satisfy our customers. As regards business content, based on our new corporate philosophy and logo, we will now focus on realizing a world of “human-centered automation” created by people and technology. By enhancing the safety and security of our customers, raising enterprise value, and contributing to solving global environmental problems, we will develop a world-class corporate structure for the Yamatake Group.

Phase 3 (FY2011~2014): Developing the Business
The period from FY2011 to FY2012 is to be the third phase, that of development. We will build the Yamatake philosophy based on “human-centered automation” into the core of our business and develop as a group with a world-class corporate structure. Furthermore, we will give the Yamatake Group a high value-added profit structure capable of generating operating income in excess of 30 billion yen.
