Environmentally Friendly Products and Services

In 1997 Yamatake drafted its environmental design guidelines for the development of environmentally-conscious products and services. We are actively promoting the development of products and services that are environmentally-conscious at every stage of the product’s lifecycle, from new product development or upgraded models of existing products through to design, production, application and disposal.

Development of environmentally-conscious products

All new Yamatake products undergo an environmental design assessment, however, with products that are difficult to assess, such as services and solutions, the lifecycle assessment (LCA) method is applied. When the assessment results meet the required level, the product is certified as an environmentally-conscious product, and receives a Yamatake Group environmental labeling (introduced in April, 2001), also known as a type II or self-declared environmental labeling.

Environmental Design Assessment

Since 1997 the Yamatake Group has been assessing the design of new products or upgraded models of existing products based on eight categories* as prescribed by the “Environmental Design Guidelines.” This evaluation adopts a 4-stage scoring method according to the degree of improvement when compared with an existing similar product, and is designed to make relative assessments.
For assessments in fiscal 2005, the Yamatake Group achieved an overall average improvement of 20.2%. In particular, resource conservation and energy conservation increased 31.2% and 27.5%, respectively. Environmental friendliness, which is based on a product’s compliance with the EU’s WEEE Directive and RoHS Directive, also improved 26.1%.

* The eight categories are energy conservation, resource conservation, environmental friendliness, extended service life, reusability/recyclability, ease of disposal, packaging materials, and information provision.

Yamatake Group Environmental Label

Yamatake Group Environmental LabelAll of our environmentally-conscious products bear Yamatakes original environmental label, and the products environmental information is provided via the Internet.Criteria of environmental label assessment and the process of certification from the Special Committee on Environmental Design are described in the Environmental Label Certification Standards.

Environmental Label Certification Standards

Based on the Yamatake Groups Environmental Design Guidelines, products are evaluated in 50 categories listed in the Environmental Design Checklist, including energy conservation, resource conservation, environmental friendliness, extended service life, and ease of disposal.

From these results, only the products that meet the criteria of environmental label assessment are certified.

Criteria for Earning the Environmental Label

According to the results of the environmental design assessment described in Environmental Design Guidelines, achieve at least a 30% improvement in one or more of the 7 categories listed below.

  • Energy conservation
  • Resource conservation
  • Environmental friendliness
  • Extended service life
  • Reusability / Recyclability
  • Ease of disposal
  • Packaging materials

Or achieve at least a 10% improvement in its overall evaluation of the categories above plus the 8th category of Information provision.

Or, achieve at least a 30% reduction in CO2 emission, SOx emission, NOx emission, energy consumption and other related data over its lifecycle, according to the results of an LCA (Life Cycle Assessment).

Reference:Classification of ISO Environmental Labels
Type Description Label ISO standard
Type I A third-party organization establishes the standards, and certifies its conformity By symbol mark ISO14024
Type II The company establishes its own standards for environmentally-conscious products, and discloses environmental performance and data of the products. Original self-declared label ISO14021
Type III LCA is utilized to display environmental impact data quantitatively. Interpretation of results is left up to customer ISO TR14025
